In the Lutheran Church, the Sacrament of Holy Communion is seen as a life-giving meal where the body and blood of Jesus Christ are received in the bread and wine. Forgiveness, and community with God and with others is the result.
We believe the Sacrament is a gift by God. No one can "earn" it or learn enough about it to understand it fully, so it is appropriate to begin receiving the Sacrament at an early age. The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America gives Pastors and congregations latitude in deciding at what age children are ready to begin receiving communion. At Holy Trinity, baptized children aged 7 and older may begin preparation for receiving Holy Communion for the first time. This is usually near the end of their 2nd grade year in school.
Each spring, the Pastor offers a class of 3-4 sessions for children preparing for First Communion.
After taking this class, children are then welcome to receive the Sacrament with their parents. Children who come to Holy Trinity from other Christian congregations where they were already receiving Holy Communion are welcome to continue doing so at our services.
Visitors should not worry or feel ashamed if they or their child inadvertently takes communion without having been baptized or trained. Christ’s gift of love and mercy to all is praised. They are invited to learn the faith of the Church, be baptized, and thereafter faithfully receive Holy Communion.
